In my digital music production class, one of our assignments was: make literally any kind of song you want, as long as it samples perennial hit “Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)” by ABBA. This is what I ended up with! I started with that funky radio-tuning sound, which made me think of a ~transmission into space~, and then grabbed the line “through the darkness” to go along with it. In honor of Perseverance’s landing that week, I thought Mars was a worthy recipient of this tune. Some coming-of-age movie soundtrack sounds for our Martian friends.
I'm a senior Astronomy major at Columbia, currently taking an almost 100% arts-based course load in my final semester! Academically, I'm into instrumentation, public outreach, and science communication/education. Outside of school, I'm by and large an art person. I've always been an artist, and art is always going to be an important component of how I define myself. I'm really passionate about fostering both my love of art and my love of astro, and I think the things that drive me towards both of them are the same.
